Weekly News 19th December 2021




The AGM of the club was held on Saturday night last. Chairman, Brendan Maher opened the meeting welcoming all and handed over to Secretary Richie Maher for the minutes of last years AGM. Richie gave a detailed report on the years finding on and off the field. He thanked the players who earlier in the year organised a 5k challenge virtually, that realised a staggering 18,500 euro with a donation going to the Irish Cancer Society.
Chairman Brendan Maher in his first year in the chair stated that it was a tremendous and historic year for the club and that the players were a credit to their families, management and all concerned in the winning of a County senior hurling and football double for a second time.
He gave special mention to the junior C hurling team on winning a Mid title with Pat Cullen coming in as manager and along with his selectors cradled in a bunch of players, may that had been missing from the scene over the years and what enjoyment they got from the victory.
The club lotto is once again the key to our finances and he thanked Jim Nolan and Eugene Stapleton who kept the weekly draw afloat during lockdown etc. He hoped that maybe an increase in participants would greatly boost this most important fundraiser.
A lot of work has been carried out at our club grounds during the year with Eamon Connolly the driving force of this development. He thanked Paddy and Jimmy Hennessy, Jerry King and Michael Fogarty who spent a day a week painting all club entrances etc. and having it in excellent order.
He went on to thank all his fellow officers development committee on the great work with more to follow. Also Siobhan Meade who is stepping down as Child Protection Officer following an excellent few years in the position. Also to Richie Sullivan as Health and Wellbeing Officer, Dick Egan who looks after jerseys ect that are always in clean and excellent condition. To Gerry Stapleton who is always on hand around the club facilities in Castleiney and also club referees Tom McGrath and Jonathan Cullen.
To the team management along with Murtagh Brennan and Martin O’Connell and the introduction of Mick Dempsey he expressed his thanks. He thanked chairman Joe Ryan, secretary Yvonne Doyle of the juvenile club and the various team managers for their work and hoped that their work will come to fruition.
He hopes that social media will bring more in to focus for the year.
Also his best wishes to Declan Laffan in the Leinster club final and to Noel McGrath and Ashling best wishes on their marriage on Wednesday.
Finally he thanked main sponsor Michael Ormond (Ormond Orthodontics) for his sponsorship to the club and also the huge response to our club training fund from within and outside the parish.
Treasurers Report: Treasurer Eamon Connolly gave a detailed account of the club finances in a year where huge expense was involved, both in the everyday running of the club and the large development project. With new 90×45 astro turf pitch and fencing ball wall, posts and wiring set up for lights etc figures in excess of 300,000 euro has been spent so far. However, when completed with walk way it will be an outstanding facility fro all. He stated that December 31st is the last day for club life membership of 500 euro. As from January 1st it is 1000 euro.

U/21B Hurling: At the Ragg on Sunday last our lads were defeated 1-13 to 2-19 by a much stronger balanced Boherlahan side in the Mid semi final.
