Club Notes 5th February 2023

CUMANN LÚTHCHLEAS GAEL TRÁTH NA gCEISTEANNA BOIRD – COMÓRTAS NÁISIÚNTA

On Saturday the 4th of February Dominic Brennan, Padraig Hennessy, Richard Maher, and Marty Ryan traveled to Croke Park for the annual National GAA table quiz. Run entirely in the Irish language the quiz includes questions on Hurling, Football, Camogie, Ladies Football, History, Geography, and General Knowledge. Our first time entering this competition saw the lads give a good account of themselves with a joint 7th place finish. Thanks to Dominic Brennan who organised our entry and well done to the lads on their efforts.

Intercounty Action

On Saturday 4th of February the Tipperary Senior Hurlers got their league campaign underway with a 20 point victory over Laois in Thurles. It was a special night for the club as all three McGrath brothers started the game. They contributed 4 points between them out of Tipp’s 2-32 total but as Shane McGrath pointed out on twitter this was 4 points less than their father Pat’s total when Tipp faced Laois in 1984. A 2-32 to 0-18 point win under their belts, Tipp now turn their attention to old enemies Kilkenny in Nowlan Park next Sunday.

It was a disappointing weekend for our footballers who made the long trek to Breffni Park in Cavan. A scoreline of 1-19 to 1-7 in favour of the home team means Tipp are without a win after their first two games in this year’s Division 3 of the National Football League. Liam McGrath started the game while Tommy Maher made an appearance towards the end of the game. Willie Eviston was an unused substitute.

Dillon Quirke Foundation Fundraiser

Our final total raised through our Long Puck competition for the Dillon Quirke Foundation was €450. Thanks to everyone who supported this worthy cause.

Post Primary Schools

Sunday saw the first ever all Tipperary Harty Cup Final. Played in Semple Stadium and contested by Thurles CBS and Cashel Community School there was great interest and build up during the week. The high scoring contest predicted never really materialised with both sets of backs proving difficult to breakdown. Ultimately Cashel ran out winners on a score of 0-12 to 0-11. Commiserations to our representatives Eoin O’Connell and Paul McCahey. While it was a disappointing result on the day their season continues with the All-Ireland series and another chance at silverware.

The Thurles CBS Harty Cup Panel. Eoin O’Connel are 6th and 7th from the left in the second row from the back.

Intercounty Development Squads

Cathal Breen, Ryan Mullins, Cathal Ryan, Ronan Murray and Daniel McDonald were involved in Mid Tipp U14 football trials on Saturday morning and we wish them all well in the weeks ahead.

Juvenile Training

Club training for U11 resumes on Saturday the 11th of February while our U13s are already back. U17 Strength and Condition training continues under the eyes of Martin O’Connell.

Congratulations to Brian Gleeson who started for the Irish Under 20 rugby team on Friday night. Brian played hurling and football for the club before making the switch to rugby. Named at number 8 Brian put in a man of the match performance against the Welsh in Wales which saw the Irish side come out as big winners on the night. Best of look to Brian in the rest of the championship.
