Club Notes 24/12/23

Pride of place this week goes to our Senior football team who won the Mid Final on Monday night last when they saw off Upperchurch Drombane in Templemore. This was a very low scoring game but the closeness of the exchanges kept a decent crowd on their toes. Half time arrived with the Church leading 3 points to 1 with Liam McGrath’s free our only score. The second half proved just as tight with scoring chances at a premium and although we could have sneaked a win close to full time, the score line of 3 points apiece meant we were going to extra time. Liam McGrath was our only scorer at this stage. John Ryan and Philip O Connell were introduced at this point and were soon followed into the fray by Darragh McCahey and Conor McGrath. Upperchurch had the best of the opening period and went 5-3 ahead and with only 1 minute left to play we were still a point behind, 6 points to 5.Conor McGrath had scored a beauty off his right and Liam McGrath had added his 4th. A mix up in the Church defence gave us a lifeline and Philip O Connell pounced on the loose ball to rattle the net. The Church had one last attack which yielded a point but it was too little too late. The final whistle was greeted with relief as much as joy. It was a game that could have gone either way but we played to the final whistle and ultimately got the reward. This was a fine team performance with every player giving their all. Tommy Maher was selected as the Man of the Match and will be presented with his trophy on Tuesday 26th at the Intermediate Mid Final.
