Club Notes 20th August 2023
20 Aug 2023County Hurling and Football Championships
Our senior footballers returned to winning ways on Saturday with an 0-11 to 0-6 win over Ardfinnan in Boherlahan. Ardfinnan started the stronger of the two teams and were 5 points to 1 up well into the first half. Our lads finally started to move up the gears and a few well worked points saw us close to gap to just a single point as both teams headed for the half time break at 5 points to 4. A solid defensive performance saw us restrict Ardfinnan to a solitary point in the second half while we kicked 7 to see out the game.
Joseph Hennessy and John Meagher are big losses in the heart of our back lines but both Daragh McCahey and Eoin O’Connell have grown into their roles and are starting to make big contributions. At the other end of the field Philip O’Connell came on late and made use of his pace to cause problems for Ardfinnan’s defence. Philip kicked a point and was unlucky not to have a second as he helped the always reliable Liam McGrath and Connor Ryan stretch out our lead late on. It is great to see younger members of the panel pushing things on and making an impact in our senior teams.
The result now means it will be all to play for against Ballina in two weeks time. While a win would see us top the group we are not yet guaranteed anything in this year’s championship.

Before the game in Boherlahan our intermediates took on Thurles Sarsfields in Templetouhy. The Sars have made a big impression since winning last year’s Junior A title and could go a long way in deciding the winner’s of this year’s title. Unfortunately they ultimately proved too strong for our lads and ran out comfortable winners in the end.
Next weekend sees us back in the Stadium for the first time this year to take on Upperchurch-Drombane in the final round of Group 3 in this year’s County Senior Hurling Championship. A a result of any kind would see us top the group and avoid the chances of a preliminary 1/4 final. A loss could see us finish anywhere from 1st to 3rd depending on how both games finish up. Holycross will take on Templederry Kenyons at the same time. Our game throws in at 4pm in Semple Stadium on Sunday.

Ladies Football
The Junior match last Friday evening against St. Patricks was called off at half time by the referee due to adverse weather conditions. A refixture for this game is to be confirmed.
The remaining fixtures in the championship include an away trip to Silvermines and a home tie against Sliabh na mBan.
The Mothers and Others continue to train for their upcoming challenge matches and blitzes.
Under 19 Hurling
On Wednesday evening the U19 hurlers travelled to Gortnahoe and met a very strong home side who took a big half time lead to the dressing rooms. Our lads rearranged the lineup during the break and with Paul McCahey on fire operating on the edge of the square we had a much better second half but ultimately lost out 5-21 to 4-12. The manner of the second half comeback was encouraging but we need to see a better attendance at training if we are going to progress in the knockout stages.
Juvenile Notes
We had mixed results this week on the various playing fields with our Minor hurlers taking on Moyne Templetuohy on Monday evening and a lack lustre performance led to defeat.
Tuesday evening saw the U13 hurlers take on the Church and a closely fought contest here ended in victory to the Church on a score line of 5-7 to 4-6.
Thursday evening finally brought victory this week with the U15 hurlers travelling to Monroe to record a win over Moyle Rovers on a score line of 2-4 to 1-4.
