Club Notes, 15 December 2024

On Saturday last the three County Champion teams gathered at Loughmore Castle for their official photograph.  We would like to express special thanks to Tommy Sweeney & Ollie Quinn for their time & help with logistics and organisation, and to Jimmy McGrath for hosting us all.  The special photograph will be on sale in the New Year, details to follow.

The Late Tommy Egan, Brittas Rd, Thurles & Kilkillahara, Loughmore

On Friday 25th October 2024 the Loughmore Castleiney GAA Club were saddened to learn of the sad passing of former club player Tommy Egan.  Having played his school days with the club he qualified as an Aircraft Technician with the Air Corps.  Making his way onto the club senior football team in the 50s he missed out on the County Final winning team of 1955 due to the GAA famous Rule 27 known as “The Ban” imposed on him however he lost the next four in a row County Finals 56,57,58 and 59.  Tommy also hurled on the junior teams of that era.

When his playing days ended he gave outstanding service to the club as a masseur, team trainer and selector on various winning teams including 1988 senior hurling and 1992 senior football County Championship winning teams.

The Club formed a guard of honour as his remains were removed for burial to St Patrick’s Cemetery.  To his sons and daughters in Thurles, his nieces and nephews in Loughmore our deepest sympathy.

The Late Tom Hayes 1944-2024, Killistafford, Cashel & The Little Road, Loughmore

It was with great sadness on the 29th October 2024 we learned of the passing following an illness of Tom Hayes, former player with the club over many years.  When the club set out in quest of senior football championship honours in 1973 Tom was the man chosen by the then selectors to captain the side and what an inspiring figure he turned out to be.  Was Tom a captain apart, no or would he ever have thought that way? But he was a person of wit, drive, and hunger for success and never say die spirit that was hard to match.

It was 18 years since a senior football final was won and on that October evening in Cashel, a place where he lived and worked as a postman he ended that barren spell as he lifted the O’Dwyer Cup with victory over Ardfinnan and champions of the county.  The Club went on to reach the Munster Club Final with Tom as captain only to lose out to a star studded UCC side.  It was ironic 51 years on that county honours were again achieved and reach a Munster Final and how delighted he was when that cup he handled all those years before was brought to his bedside to hold aloft once again.

To his wife Chris, sons Martin and Enda, daughters Sorcha and Niamh, sister Sadie our deepest sympathy.  The Club with former teammates formed a guard of honour as his remains were removed from Dualla church to his place of burial.
