CLUB NOTES 04/07/24
04 Aug 2024
The 2024 County football championship kicked off on Saturday evening in Littleton as we played Killenaule. This game was played a very good pace with both teams prepared to attack at every opportunity. We got the first three points on the board before Killenaule hit back with two white flags of their own. On the 13th minute Liam Treacy got on the end of a good move to send the keeper the wrong way and he made no mistake as he rattled the net. Now 1-03 to 0-02. We scored 5 more points before halftime to Killenaule’s 2 to leave the score 1-08 to 0-04 at the break. Brian McGrath replaced Liam Treacy who had picked up an injury during the first half and almost from the restart Aidan McGrath pointed. Liam McGrath had another point in the 39th minute but that was our final score. Killenaule added a further 3 points but will rue a lot of wides throughout the match. Final score was 1-10 to 0-07. Clonmel Commercials are up next in 2 weeks time.
As the football started this week, it was coincidental that I met up with the man who captained Loughmore Castleiney to victory in 1973. Tom Hayes was the skipper of that very successful team and 51 years later he is still as interested in the fortunes of the club as he was back then. He is looking forward to seeing our progress this year and wished all our players the very best for the upcoming championship.

The u19 hurling team had their first outing of the year on Wednesday evening in Cuguilla against Upperchurch but a much slicker Church team proved to be a tough nut to crack. We don’t have a big panel in this age group and we are playing a lot of our younger lads who have 2 and 3 years left in this u19 squad. Our boys showed plenty of character but the end result of 5-21 to 1-10leaves us with plenty of room for improvement.

We hosted an U9 hurling blitz on Friday nightwith Silvermines, Kilruane and Upperchurch travelling to Cugilla.
There were 80 kids involved on the night, with all kids playing in 3 games over the 60 minutes.
Thanks to all those parents for helping out during the blitz.
On Sunday our Junior Football team played Sean Treacys in Drombane and with a lot of young players on the team we put up a fine performance with plenty of good moves resulting in some excellent scores. Always in control we won on a score line of 5-08 to 0-06.
