The Tipperary senior hurling and football teams will be participating in a open evening for supporters which will be held at Semple Stadium on Thursday, May 10 from 6pm to 7.30pm. This is an opportunity for supporters to meet players and management , get autographs signed and attend a training session. There will also be a “Beat the goalkeeper competition” for children. The intention is to promote support for our senior hurling and football teams and encourage people to attend the double header Munster championship games between Tipperary and Kerry in football and Tipperary and Limerick in hurling at Semple Stadium on Sunday May 27. The slogan for this year’s championship promotions is “Nothing beats being there”.

On Sunday last in excellent conditions in Holycross our U/21 A footballers increased their lead at the top of the County leader board by taking their tenth title in the grade on the score 3-11 to 1-11. This is a grade in which we are generally to the fore, but a difficult competition to win and perhaps this year has been a remarkable success as to the final they were without at least four first choice players. They say to come out of the box quickly means a lot and certainly this was the case on Sunday as they chalked up a seven point advantage in ten minutes. However, this was no easy victory against a fine Arravale side and defending County champions and but for some excellent play from midfield and forward division and a well worked third goal midway through the second half the story could be different. We congratulate the team and their management on an excellent achievement. The cup was presented by football board chairman Noel Morris to a jubilant Henry Maher following the game.
Senior Hurling: On Saturday evening next in Templetouhy we play Drom in our final group game. This is a most important game as with a defeat and a victory under our belts a semi final spot is still open. All panel to attend. Check diary for time. Well done to our players with the County minor hurling team who defeated Kerry on Wednesday night last.
Sympathy: On behalf of the senior and juvenile club we extend our sympathy to the Meagher family, Laha on the passing of their mother Philomena during the week. Martin, James and Brendan gave outstanding service to the club down the years with Brendan presently being chairman of the juvenile club. Also to John Joe Nesbitt on the passing of two of this brothers, Jim and Martin during the week. May they Rest in Peace.
The Loughmore-Castleiney under 221 footballers captured the county “A” title for the 10th time today with a well deserved 3-11 to 1-11 victory over west champions Arravale Rovers.
Loughmore-Castleiney who last won the title in 2006 got off to a great start and had the ball in the back of the Arravale Rovers net twice inside 10 minutes. The first goal coming from the boot of Aidan McGrath and the second goal was scored from the penalty spot by his first cousin Liam McGrath. Loughmore-Castleiney were very dominant through out the first half and took a nine point lead to the dressingrooms at the break 2-07 to 0-04.
Arravale were always going to come out fighting in the second half, and they outscored Loughmore-Castleiney in the first 25 minutes, scoring 1-03 to Loughmore-Castleiney’s 0-02. Eamonn Connolly then had Loughmore-Castleiey’s third goal to put some distance between the sides. In the end the boys in red and green won on a final score of 3-11 to 1-11.
After the game County football board chairman Noel Morris presented the cup to the victorious Loughmore-Castleiney captain Henry Maher.

At the resent GAA Congress in Laois the following rule changes were agreed and will become operative from 14th May for all competitions:
1. Football Only – “Square Ball”
This has been amended to allow a player enter the small rectangle once the final deliberate play of the ball has been made, i.e as soon as the player kicks, hand-passes, fist passes or deliberately flicks the ball into the small rectangle then the attacking player may enter. The rule is unchanged with regard to “Set Play” i.e. Free Kicks, Line Balls and 45s – in these instances players are not permitted to enter the small rectangle before the ball.
2. Hurling and Football
An additional Power of the Referee has been added as follows:
“To consult, on a needs basis, with a linesman or umpire(s) – where neutral – in order to establish matters of fact. In the case of the Umpires, this shall include consultation concerning the validity of a score when the Referee is in doubt”.
This rule change gives the referee power to consult with the linemen and umpires and will be particularly relevant in the adjudication on “square balls”.
3. Hurling and Football - Rule 2: The Players, Rules of Specification
This has been amended to allow substitutions be made when the referee has stopped play after a score or wide or for a free, sideline puck/kick or where the Referee has stopped play for medical attention to an injured player.
Previously substitutions could only be made when the ball had gone out of play following a score or a wide, or when a stoppage in play was called by the referee for medical attention to an injured player.
